A production company is the step in the film making process that organise the making of the film. Their tasks include scheduling, budgeting/financing, casting and scripting, along with various others. There are two main types of production companies. The first one is independent film production companies and the second one is major film production companies.

Independent.
These companies normally have very limited funds and the money is normally provided through personal savings, loans or investments such as sponsorship. The cast in these productions usually are less well known as they tend to be less expensive. This is along with a small production team in order to keep the costs to a minimum. Major.
These companies tend to have very high funds available to them often thanks to large investment or earnings. The cast of these films tend to involve well known actors/actresses with a lot of talent in order to make the film as popular as possible. Below are some examples of these companies.
