Most films are classified by the BBFC which stands for the British Board of Film Classification.
They class the films as U, PG, 12A, 12, 15, 18.
U - Universal. This rating is described to be suitable for all ages (usually above the age of 4) however, common sense is needed to determine if certain films are suitable to the parent's child.
PG - Parental Guidance. This rating is suitable for all potential viewers, it is said that such films should not upset audiences of children over the ages of 8 or older but younger children can watch the film with parental guidance.
An example horror (difficult to find PG and U rated horror films) film is Frankenweenie.
12A - This rating means that the viewers are above age 12 but audiences younger than this can watch it with an adult's supervision. The adult most decide if the film is suitable for the under 12. These contain similar themes the the 12 category.
12 - This rating is for viewers simply over the age of 12. Anyone under this age shouldn't watch the film. These films can often involve the rare use of bad language or discrete sexual references.
An example is the Woman in black.
15 - This rating is for viewers over the age of 15. These films may involve excessive bad language for example or excessive violence, drug use, strong sexual references or discrimination. where people younger the age of 15 could find it intimidating.
An example is Ouija.
18 - This rating is for audiences over the age of 18. These films contain very strong violence, very frequent usage of bad language, strong and shocking horror and discriminatory behavior.
An example of this is Saw.
