Iconography.

Iconography is the visual images and symbols used in forms of art and in our case, film titles. The purpose of iconography is to help the audience make a decision regarding the genre of the film. This is achieved by the media portraying certain genres and sub-genres in films with certain symbols and features.

Examples of this use of iconography are the psychological horror sub-genre being represented by features such as the individuals in the film going through traumatic experiences and these people facing their biggest fears in an awful and traumatic manner. Other typical psychological horror film stereotypes include the deaths being particularly 'gruesome' or 'disgusting'.
